Fastener Basics
Below are some basic concepts in fasteners that are helpful to consider when ordering.
Thread Measurement Methods
A: Last Scratch
The distance from the end of the stud to the “last mark left by the threading process”. This includes partial, imperfect threads.
B: Usable Thread
The distance a standard hex nut will traverse when installed to the limits of the threads. This does not include partial, imperfect threads. It also must be kept in mind that hex nuts have a small internal champfer.
There are two common industry measurements for studs, “end-to-end” and “firs-to-first”. An end-to-end measurement measures the literal overall length of the stud. A first-to-first measurement instead excludes from the measurement the ends of the stud beyond their threaded area.
A: End-to-End
B: First-to-First
